A story defining the struggles of a young psychiatrist and his wife—childhood sweethearts—as their marriage is bombarded by the intense involvement with some of world’s sickest mentally ill. His wife breaks from her traditional family to support her maverick husband in his battles with the medical establishment. She eventually pursues her own career in accounting. The severe injury of their only child causes recrimination and a separation. When the doctor is accused of patient abuse, the adoration he receives in the profession and the media turns to scorn. A powerful attack instigated by some disgruntled staff and promulgated by the bureaucracy threatens loss of license and imprisonment. A court trial follows. Supported by patients and their families who tell their stories of recovery, the doctor survives the court battle and is exonerated. But, as in all wars, there are casualties. The novel is a riveting read.
